Welcome to NIS’s 2015-2016 school year! We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both the home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:
1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience
2) Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
3) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
4) Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life
5) Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
6) Knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school and go on to college
Together, we will create a year of excellence for our children as we focus on improving student and family engagement, implementing our own curriculum framework based on Common Core States Standards. We are determined to deliver excellent mathematics and writing instruction, and we will create a school where safety, respect, accountability, support and excellence are highly evident!
We will continue to provide early intervention and enrichment experiences for each child in mathematics, and engaging our children in complex reading and writing tasks that will prepare them to meet the international standards. In mathematics, we will focus on improving our students’ ability to solve multi-step story problems.
As we promote development of values in our school, we have changed the names of our sections with different traits that we want to embody as part of NIS family. We aim to instill these traits in our students so they may become well-rounded and productive citizens.
We will continue to emphasize on making our vision and mission the core of our daily work with children, teachers and parents. In living up to our claim of creating a culture of college readiness, this year we will build shared understandings about what this means and ways parents and teachers can work together to ensure that every NIS student is college-ready.
For this purpose, we are encouraging our high school students to focus and work diligently from the beginning of the school year to achieve high marks in all areas. Participation in co-curricular activities and extra-curricular activities are required to simulate the learning process through practical learning. As they involve themselves in their learning process, they can achieve high academic performance which will result in high marks and high cumulative GPA. This will increase their chance of being admitted easily to any college that they wish to enroll in. SAT practice for Math and English are part of our syllabus which aims to provide rigid training and preparedness for the said standardized test.
This year, we are glad to inform you that we will be implementing ISA (International School’s Assessment). It is an assessment program designed for students in international schools worldwide focusing from grades 3 to 10. This assessment aims to measure students’ performance in relation to scales that describe levels of proficiency in mathematical literacy, reading, writing and scientific literacy performance in relation to other international school students at the same grade level.
Continuous assessment will be used to evaluate students from Grade 1 to Grade 5, which means the two major exams in the First Term and the Second Term will be cancelled this year. Instead, teachers will assess the students based on formative and summative evaluation quarterly. This will eliminate the pressure on both students and their families in preparation for the exams. Major exams will be administered starting from Grade 6.
Our expectations are particularly high this year. These expectations can be achieved if we are going to work together. Parents, it is very important that children are present and on time every day! Instruction begins at 8 AM sharp! Students who arrive after 8:05 AM will be marked late! If we want our children to be college-ready, and if we want them to meet the NIS standards, we must ensure they do not miss instruction. Excellent attendance is the first step to helping our students become college-ready.
We will be reinforcing 100% compliance with our school uniform policy as part of our efforts to continue improving the learning climate in our school. Our school administration is always ready to attend to your needs. Due to many demands of our growing population, we are kindly requesting you to book an appointment and abide by the schedule so we are able to serve you to our best ability.
We must be on the same team in teaching our children to respect each other and all adults in our community. College readiness also requires us to teach our children to have excellent character, skills and manners. We are committed to CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT and we want you to join us as we are determined to BE EXCELLENT!
On behalf of NIS Family, we are energized and excited about the upcoming year and we look forward to working with you. It is always an honour for us to share in your children’s education.
